Vegan & Cruelty-Free Candles: What Does That Mean Exactly?

Both vegan and cruelty-free products are becoming more common and accessible in our marketplace. Products with this type of labeling vary greatly in industry, from household goods to cosmetics to clothing, all labeled as vegan and cruelty-free. This labeling is expanding into the world of candles, as many consumers seek to avoid beeswax (an animal by-product) and candles with ingredients tested on animals. Due to the growing number of consumers showing interest in both vegan and cruelty-free items, vegan items are often made with cruelty-free ingredients. Still, it is essential to note the distinction between the two as this is not always the case. A cruelty-free product is not vegan by default, and a vegan product is not cruelty-free by default.

What is Veganism?

According to the Vegan Society, “Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment.” Vegans enjoy a plant-based diet that avoids meat, fish, and all animal by-products such as dairy and honey. Vegans also apply this way of living to all products and materials that they use, not just the food they eat. They make sure the ingredients of all items that they use are not animal by-products. The main goal of veganism is to avoid exploiting animals for any purpose, including accessories, clothing, makeup, bathroom items, and any items tested on animals. According to vegans, living this type of lifestyle benefits animals, the environment, and our own health.

What is Cruelty-Free?

Products that are not tested on animals in any way during any point of production are considered cruelty-free. Animal testing is “an experimentation carried out on animals … used to assess the safety and effectiveness of everything from medication to cosmetics, as well as understanding how the human body works”. It is essential to note that for a product to be genuinely cruelty-free, neither the final product nor its ingredients undergo animal testing. When shopping, it is crucial to research the products that you are purchasing if you want them to be genuinely cruelty-free. Many companies label their final product as cruelty-free because it has not been tested on animals but fail to make consumers aware that some of the product ingredients may have undergone animal testing. Many brands test on animals before they deem their products safe for human consumption. While there has been an increase in the brands taking a stand against animal testing, it still occurs worldwide in various industries, from cosmetics to household goods to foods. Animal testing is frowned upon as it not only exploits animals for the benefit of humans, but it also often involves pain and distress to be caused to the animals used.

What are Vegan and Cruelty-free Candles?

Candles that are considered vegan and cruelty-free do not contain any animal by-products, and the ingredients of the candles have not undergone animal testing. For a scented candle to be considered vegan, it must not have any animal by-products such as beeswax used in its formulation. For candles to be considered cruelty-free, none of the ingredients within the formulation of the candles (wax, fragrance, additives, etc.) undergo animal testing at any point of production. It is important to look for both labels if you are seeking both characteristics when purchasing candles. For example, if a candle contains beeswax, but none of the ingredients have undergone animal testing, it could be labeled cruelty-free but is not considered vegan. For those looking to purchase candles that are both free of animal by-products and any animal testing, Halarosis offers many different room-filling fragrances. Halarosis candles are 100% soy wax, and none of the ingredients in the candles have undergone animal testing.
